Axel was a crew member of the Vigilant. He and Soren got kidnapped by Agents at an airport, but eventually was rescued by Niobe and Ghost.
Later, while the teams of the three ships were in the Matrix to help Neo go to the Source, Axel was with Jax on the console, when spotted approached Sentinels. He went to the bridge to observe but the catwalk fell on his way back, and he was killed by the fall. The broken catwalk soon impaled Jax, killing him, too.
