Axel was a crew member of the Vigilant.
When Niobe and Ghost were at the airport to call all ships for a full recall, Niobe gets Jax, who informs her of Axel's capture at that very location with Soren and the others trying to rescue him, and Jax will kill him if the Agents get him in the air. But, Niobe managed to get on the plane, where she discovered he has a broken leg. After the Agent interrogating him had possessed the plane's pilot and tried to close the open cargo chute, Axel managed to get up to flip him off before backflipping out before the chute fully closed.
Unfortunately, after parachuting to the ground, he was picked up by another Agent, who puts him in the passenger seat of a car he was driving. Regaining consciousness again, Axel puts the seatbelt on before forcefully turning the wheel on the Agent to cause the car to roll, killing the Agent, and Ghost to recover him. Reaching an exit, Axel expresses his thankfulness to them, proclaiming their presence at the airport as fate, and complies with Niobe telling him to tell Soren the location of their recall meeting. Since he was unable to attend the meeting, Soren tells Niobe that Axel is happy to be alive, thanks to her and Ghost.
Later, while the teams of the three ships were in the Matrix to help Neo go to the Source, Axel stayed with Jax on the console because of his broken leg, when the alarm warned them of approaching Sentinels. He went to the bridge to observe and discovers the Sentinels were out of EMP range and threw a Tow Bomb, but the catwalk broke from the weight of his leg brace on his way back to warn Jax, resulting in him falling to his death. The broken catwalk soon impaled Jax behind his back, killing him, too.
