Neo's Choice is the thirty-first scene of The Matrix Reloaded.

Description[]

This scene is in direct continuation of the The One's Function.

The Architect told Neo of the two choices he had. He first told him of the disaster that would most probably strike if Neo decided not to go to the Source. He explained to Neo that if the process of reloading was not completed, then there will be a cataclysmic system crash killing all the humans connected to the Matrix, which coupled with the destruction of Zion will result in the extinction of the entire human race.

Trinity in screens

Notice how Trinity is visible in the screens behind the Architect

Neo expressed his doubts that the Machines will let the humans go extinct, because of their dependance upon humans for their energy. The Architect replied by saying that the machines are ready to accept certain levels of survival. He continued by saying that the relevant issue was whether Neo was ready to take responsibility for the destruction of the entire human race. He then flicked his pen changing the view on the screens to show the lives of various humans throughout the world.

He then said that he found reading Neo's reactions intriguing. He told Neo that the previous Ones were, by design, supposed to create a profound attachment with the general human race, thus facilitating the function of the One. But Neo's case was different. He had created an attachment with a more specific human, namely Trinity. The Architect then once again flicked the pen to show her fighting the Agent. He then tells Neo, with a smile, that she entered the Matrix to save him, but at the cost of her own life.

Neo heads to the Matrix

Neo chooses to save Trinity.

The Architect then finally gives Neo the two choices. Neo could take the door on his right, which would take him to the Source, or he could take the door on the left, and try to save Trinity, but at the cost of the entire Human race. Now Neo faces the problem he referred to earlier, Choice.

The Architect says that both, Neo and himself already knew the course of their actions. He told Neo, about how he could see the chain reaction going on within him, and the emotions taking over him and overwhelming reason and logic, the simple fact that Neo couldn't save Trinity.

Neo threaten's The Architect

Neo threatens the Architect before he leaves.

Neo made his choice and went for the left door. The Architect then stated that hope was simultaneously the source of humans' strength and weakness.

Neo than states that if he were the Architect he would hope that they wouldn't meet again, to which he replied that they won't.

Quotes[]

The Architect:  It is interesting reading your reactions. Your five predecessors were by design. based on a similar predication, a contingent affirmation that was meant to create a profound attachment to the rest of your species, facilitating the function of the one. While the others experienced this in a very general way, your experience is far more specific. Vis-a-vis, love.
Neo:  Trinity.
The Architect: Apropos, she entered the Matrix to save your life at the cost of her own.
Neo:  No.
The Architect:  Which brings us at last to the moment of truth, wherein the fundamental flaw is ultimately expressed, and the anomaly revealed as both beginning, and end. There are two doors. The door to your right leads to the source, and the salvation of Zion. The door to the left leads back to the matrix, to her, and to the end of your species. As you adequately put, the problem is choice. But we already know what you're going to do, don't we? Already I can see the chain reaction, the chemical precursors that signal the onset of emotion, designed specifically to overwhelm logic and reason. An emotion that is already blinding you from the simple and obvious truth: she is going to die, and there is nothing that you can do to stop it.
The Architect:  [Neo walks to the door on his left] Humph. Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness.
Neo: If I were you, I would hope that we don't meet again.
The Architect: We won't.
