Lightning rifle

A Lightning Rifle is an EMP-based weapon used by the resistance.

The Lightning Rifle requires two hands and fires a lighting like bolt of electricity that effectively disrupts any electrical equipment. It is primarily used by the resistance as a last resort when Sentinels breach the hull of a hovercraft. One or two well-placed shots can bring down a Sentinel, making it comparatively more powerful than the solid bullets used in APUs and turrets. The weapon also has a monitor attached to it, which is most likely used to track targets.

Despite being intended for use on machines, the weapon also works well on humans: In the first Matrix movie Cypher uses one to kill Dozer and injures Tank. Tank then used the rifle on Cypher, throwing him across the room and killing him.

The weapon's main disadvantages are a short firing time, and the long 3-4 seconds as the rifle recharges, which leave the user vulnerable to multiple Sentinels. Also the user cannot fire while moving being forced to stand still and grip the floor with their boots due to the immense recoil it produces.

Some of the resistance infantry were equipped with Lightning Rifles during the defense of Zion. They were highly ineffective against the massive Sentinel swarms when they were in the open, but performed better when the machines were forced into single file down narrow passages and tunnels.
