If we have to give these bastards our lives...then we give them hell before we do.

― Captain Mifune during the Battle of Zion[src]

Captain Mifune was the head of Zion's Armored Personnel Unit (APUs).

History

He led his APU's into battle with the Sentinels and boosted the morale of his troops by saying, "If it's our time to die, it's our time. All I ask is, if we have to give these bastards our lives, we give 'em hell before we do!"

Mifune initially frowned upon the Kid's involvement in the battle as an ammunition reloader because he thought the Kid was too young to assist the APU squadron. However, the Kid was able to convince the Captain, arguing that the Machines do not discriminate based on the age of their enemy. Mifune approved of the Kid's stance and allowed him to serve but also treated him like a mature soldier.

Mifune was one of the last 13 APUs left standing during the battle. Resigned to his fate that he would die defending the Dock, Mifune was determined to kill as many Sentinels as he could before the end. When he called for a reload of ammunition, Kid was the one sent. However, one of the cases got stuck during the reload and the outlook looked bleak. Hastily, Kid climbed atop the APU's back and fixed the error. Following the case jam, Mifune fired off one final round into the Sentinel swarm. Unfortunately, the swarm was too much. They overwhelmed Mifune, flaying him alive.

Horribly-mutilated, Mifune told Kid that he needed to open the gate to allow the Mjolnir

(“Hammer”) to enter, before dying. Kid took up Captain Mifune's APU and continued to the gate.

When Kid told Mifune he might not be able to carry out his request because he never finished the training exercise, Mifune reassured him by saying that he never completed the training either, however this may have been an attempt to give kid the confidence he needed to fulfill the task of destroying the massive chains which held the counterweights on Zion's gate 3.

Behind the Scenes

  • He was portrayed by Nathaniel Lees
  • It is considered that the character of Captain Mifune is in reference to late Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, to whom Lees shares a striking resemblance.
  • Mifune is also the original family name of Speed Racer, another film by the Wachowskis.
